Leevi Madetoja´s music on a newly released CD by the Tapiola Chamber Choir
|
A new CD "So What If I Sing" by the Tapiola Chamber Choir has been released by Alba Records. This recording of choral songs by Leevi Madetoja contains one half of the composer's pieces for mixed choir. The album forms a part of the Tapiola Chamber Choir's National Library project, in which the choir documents the works of Finland's major choral composers. Previous recordings include the unaccompanied works for mixed choir and female choir of Toivo Kuula (1883-1918) in 1994, and Jean Sibelius's (1865-1957) a cappella songs for mixed choir, female choir and children's choir, in 1998. The conductor in these recordings is Hannu Norjanen.

Succesful Faure´s Requiem with Minkowski
|
Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tapiola Chamber Choir had a succesful evening with French conductor Marc Minkowski in Temppeliaukio Church on February 19, 2010. They performed Gabriel Faure´s Requiem, and soloists were Marita Solberg, soprano, and Gabriel Suovanen, baritone. The choir was co-operating with Minkowski for the first time.

The Tapiola Chamber Choir has concerts in Savonlinna and Mikkeli in March, 2010. The programme will consist of motets of J.S.Bach and works of Leevi Madetoja and Einojuhani Rautavaara. The concerts will be conducted by Hannu Norjanen.

Tapiola Chamber Choir has a 25th anniversary jubileeconcert in October in Sellosali, Espoo. Choir also performs twice Einojuhani Rautavaara´s Vigilia this year. During fall season choir co-operates with Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tapiola Sinfonietta.

Tapiola Chamber Choir visited Taiwan
|

Tapiola Chamber Choir was one of the six foreign groups invited to perform in the 8th Taipei International Choral Festival between the 26th and August 2nd 2008. Ferdinand Ting, organizer of the festival from the Taipei Philharmonic Foundation, said there was a choir for almost every taste. The main venue for the festival was at the National Concert Hall in Taipei.

Tapiola Chamber Choir co-operating with Esa-Pekka Salonen
|
Tapiola Chamber Choir is co-operating with Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra
and Esa-Pekka Salonen four times within one month.
The long expected Finnish premiere of "La Passion de Simone" by Kaija
Saariaho takes place in the opening concert of Helsinki Festival on August
17, 2008. The performance is directed by Peter Sellars, the soprano soloist
is Pia Freund and the dancer in the performance is Michael Schumacher.
The concert will be broadcasted live by YLE Radio 1. The concert is audible
also via Internet. The concert will be repeated at Finlandia Hall on August
18, 2008.
The same production will solemnize the Baltic Sea Festival, planned by
Esa-Pekka Salonen and Valeri Gergijev. The concert will take place at
Berwald Hall in Stockholm, Sweden on August 21, 2007. The concert will be
broadcasted to six EBU countries.
Tapiola Chamber Choir has been performing works of Kaija Saariaho for over
two decades and has recorded four of her compositions. Kaija Saariahos work
"Tag des Jahrs" was commissioned by Tapiola Chamber Choir.
Tapiola Chamber Choir will also participate in the megalomanic work
"Gurrelieder" by Arnold Schönberg on September 19, 2007 at Finlandia Hall.
The massive choir performing with the Finnish Radio Orchestra consists of
Tapiola Chamber Choir, Helsinki Philharmonic Choir and YL Male Voice Choir.

An Aulis Sallinen opera recording 'The Recording of the Year 2006'
|
The Finnish Broadcasting Company has awarded the recording of Aulis Sallinen's opera Kuningas lähtee Ranskaan (The King Goes Forth to France) as 'The Recording of the Year 2006'.
Soloists of the recording include singers Tommi Hakala (baritone), Lilli Paasikivi (mezzo-soprano) and Jyrki Anttila (tenor). Tapiola Chamber Choir, The Finnish Philharmonic Choir and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra are conducted by Okko Kamu, conductor related to many Sallinen recordings. Kamu also conducted the world premiere of the work at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 1984. The CD is produced by Ondine.
The awarded recording was selected among 91 entries produced in Finland or presenting Finnish creative or interpretative art music. The award was grounded in 1971, and it is awarded annually to the performers and producers of recordings.

The City of Espoo Culture Prize awarded to the Tapiola Chamber Choir and conductor Hannu Norjanen
|
The Espoo Board of Culture has awarded the 2005 City of Espoo Culture Prize to the Tapiola Chamber Choir and conductor Hannu Norjanen in recognition of their valuable contribution to the cultural life of the city. The prize was awarded at Espoo Council Hall on December 14th.
"Setting its goals high, the choir has gained a wide reputation both at home and abroad and has secured a position at the top of the Finnish choral world," noted Juhani Hakala, chairperson of the Board of Culture, speaking of the factors that influenced the choice.

World Premier of Vasks´ Mass at the Helsinki Bach Festival
|
The Tapiola Chamber Choir will perform at the IX Helsinki Bach Week on Wednesday, November 9th at 7 PM together with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra led by Juha Kangas. The programme will consist of works by J.S.Bach and the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks.
Vasks’ “Missa” was originally composed for choir and organ; a new setting for choir and string orchestra will receive its world premier in Helsinki with the composer himself attending. The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra under Juha Kangas has a long tradition of performing and recording Vasks’ works, and in recent years his music has also been part of the repertoire of the Tapiola Chamber Choir. Vasks is in the limelight in Finland this November also because his third symphony will be premiered by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra under John Storgårds on November 25th.
The Helsinki Bach Week is arranged every five years by the Cantores Minores Boys’ Choir.
The programme of the festival week, November 6th - 13th 2005, consists of seven concerts. The artistic director of the festival is conductor Hannu Norjanen.

Mäntyjärvi premiere
|
Jaakko Mäntyjärvi has served as the Tapiola Chamber Choir’s composer-in-residence since 2000. The fruits of this unique collaboration have included premieres of works commissioned by the choir, the Finnish premieres of several other works, two CD records, and collaboration with the composer’s publisher, SULASOL. Mäntyjärvi has also rehearsed and performed his own works with the choir.
The contract will end in 2005 with the premiere of a commissioned work, Introitus et Kyrie Missae Sancti Henrici, at the Academic Degree Ceremony of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Helsinki on May 13th, 2005. The premiere will be conducted by Hannu Norjanen.

The King Goes Forth to France
|
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Philharmonic Choir, the Tapiola Chamber Choir, and 16 soloists will present a concert version of Aulis Sallinen’s opera The King Goes Forth to France at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki on April 7th, 2005.
The opera was premiered at the Savonlinna Opera festival in 1984 and has also been staged at Covent Garden and in Santa Fe. The work will also be recorded for release as a CD.
Composer Aulis Sallinen will celebrate his 70th birthday this year.
"The King Goes Forth to France” is the third major Finnish opera recording to feature the Tapiola Chamber Choir. The choir has previously appeared on recordings of Erik Bergman’s opera “The Singing Tree” in 1992 and Aarre Merikanto’s opera “Juha” in 1995.

Tapiola Chamber Choir and Synfonia Tapiola perform original Baroque music from the Baltic Sea region

The Tapiola Chamber Choir and the Synfonia Tapiola Baroque ensemble will launch their long-term project dedicated to the original Baroque music of the Baltic Sea region with an Easter concert on March 20, 2005.
The concert in Tapiola Church will feature the St. Matthew Passion of Johann Valentin Meder (1649-1719).
Meder could be characterized as a veritable “Hanse musician” since he practised his art in many of the coastal cities of the Baltic, including Tallinn, Riga, Lübeck, and Copenhagen.
In Mederer’s time, Finland, Ingria, Estonia, and Livonia all belonged to Sweden.

A new CD by the Tapiola Chamber Choir has been released by Alba Records. The title refers to a collection of new choir works commissioned from a group of composers from the Baltic Sea region. The disc contains four world premier recordings of works composed under the auspices of the Tapiola Chamber Choir’s own commissioning project.
The composers featured on the new CD are Kaija Saariaho, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Jouni Kaipainen, and Urmas Sisask. All four works were premiered in 1992-2004. Together, they reflect the diversity, vitality and International character of the northern musical scene. The work by Tüür also features the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble renowned for its performances of music by modern Nordic and Baltic composers. The premier recordings are conducted by Hannu Norjanen.
